The Labyrinth
Labyrinths are an ancient archetype pattern found in many cultures around
the world and are found in churches, on pottery, tablets and tiles
dating back 4,000 years or more. Unlike a maze, with blind alleys
and dead ends in which one can get lost, the path of a labyrinth
wends back and forth, weaving its' way to the center, then returns
to come full circle out again. Labyrinths may be used for walking
meditations, and as the site for rituals and ceremony, as tools to
evoke metaphor, increase awareness, enhance spiritual and personal
exploration, promote community, and restore a sense of peace. This
particular labyrinth is a classical seven-circuit or Cretan
labyrinth. The seven-cycle labyrinth is used by some to symbolize
the seven chakras for meditation purposes. The natural woodland
setting amplifies the sense of connection with nature and the earth.
This labyrinth was set by the directions of a compass. As you
enter it, you face due west, so one may orient and
honor the Four Directions if one so chooses.
Debra gathered hundreds of similarly sized cobblestones from around
the property to lay out this 48 foot diameter labyrinth. Visitors
are welcome, individually, in groups, for wedding or other
ceremonies, to experience the elements of stone and moss in a
setting surrounded by oak and ironwood trees and nearby ponds.
Debra also designed and maintains the gardens all around the
castle. |
