Jack Harlow:
(1942-) Bio
Jack remembers his first sculpture. When he was six, he carved an
Abraham Lincoln bust out of a crayon. Jack says that it was a very
good likeness. Unfortunately the razor he used slipped into a crack
at the top of the desk, and another student cut himself. His
artistic talent was noted throughout high school where he was
President of the Art Club. Early years included BB guns, western
fireworks (M-80’s+) and chemistry sets as his family relocated from
Missouri to Colorado to Montana. At the young age of 15, Jack
experimented with gun powder which evaporated his right hand and two
finger of his left. Thus, it was obvious to him that he better earn
his “grub” with his mind.
His educational path led him to earn a PhD in Mechanical Engineering
with a specialty in materials science at the University of
Missouri. There he also led in innovative ideas such as making a
wheel chair to accommodate the special needs of its user. From
Mizzou to a life time career at Knolls Atomic Power Lab in
Niskayuna, NY, Jack was known for his creativity, earning patents
(one for breeder fuel fabrication) and many awards for concepts
relative to the nuclear navy. He was provided a multi million dollar
lab, fondly referred to as Skunk Quirks, where his main job was to
invent until his retirement in 2003.
With his fine attention to artistic detail, Jack has dabbled in
drawing and oil painting and excelled in house design and
construction, interior design, and woodworking. His work can be
observed at his house and barn (built from scratch), and his son’s
house (built from scratch), projects that began in 1977 and
continued until 2015. With major construction projects completed,
Jack (ironically) passionately began producing cannons and
sculptures using metal working and welding. On September
15,
2018, Jack entered one of his uniquely created cannons in a
Steampunk Festival in Troy, NY and won second place. Since then,
Jack has created a number of sculptures which enhance his family’s
yard and area around their home as well as a beautiful Chinese
themed raised garden and rock wall. The sculptures remain unnamed
as Jack’s philosophy is, “The eyes of the individual gives it a
name.”
