Louis Nicolas Domanico:
(1944-2022)
Lou and Susan Domanico were neighbors and close friends to the
Breitenbachs for decades, and lived directly across the street.
Louis was retired from NYS Dept. of Transportation and was an active
member of the Capital District Blacksmiths. He and Thom Breitenbach
attended the blacksmith meetings together locally, and before that,
with a group named New England Blacksmiths, meeting in West Stockbridge,
and led by renowned
blacksmith William Senseny. Lou was a former member and past
president of the Guilderland Historical Society (and his own house
has a fascinating history). He enjoyed
creative cooking, household projects, and tinkering in his
workshop/barn.
He and his wife Susan were avid art collectors and had beautiful
wall art as well as many outdoor sculptures. We owe a debt of
gratitude to the estate of Louis Domanico for the donation of the
statuary, which included the four pieces we have by Arline Schulman,
and the other anonymous pieces in our park. It was the exact thing
that gave us the idea to start the museum here at Castle Breitenbach
with a sculpture trail.
Lou owned a welder, and blacksmithing equipment, and given that he
had a number of round pieces of scrap metal in his shop, exactly
like those employed in the sculptures to your left, we attribute,
with absolutely certainly, these two sculptures to Louis N. Domanico.
